Background of the Study
Health literacy—the ability to access, understand, and use health information—plays a crucial role in shaping health outcomes. In Oyo State, Nigeria, low levels of health literacy among mothers can negatively impact maternal and child health by hindering proper use of healthcare services, delaying treatment, and contributing to poor health behaviors (Oluwaseun, 2023). Adequate health literacy empowers individuals to make informed decisions regarding nutrition, immunization, antenatal care, and hygiene practices. Several interventions, including community education programs and the integration of health education into school curricula, have been implemented in Oyo State to improve health literacy. These initiatives have been associated with increased utilization of healthcare services and improved health outcomes. However, persistent gaps in knowledge, compounded by socioeconomic disparities and cultural factors, continue to pose challenges for maternal and child health. Recent studies emphasize that improving health literacy can lead to significant reductions in maternal and child morbidity and mortality (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of health literacy on maternal and child health in Oyo State, thereby providing evidence to inform targeted health education strategies (Adebayo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing health education efforts, maternal and child health outcomes in Oyo State remain suboptimal, partly due to low levels of health literacy. Many mothers lack the necessary knowledge to engage effectively with healthcare services, leading to delayed or inappropriate care during pregnancy and childhood. Cultural beliefs, language barriers, and limited access to quality information further exacerbate this problem. The persistence of preventable complications such as low birth weight, malnutrition, and vaccine-preventable diseases indicates that existing health literacy initiatives may not be reaching the most vulnerable populations. The lack of robust evaluation data on the impact of health literacy on health outcomes makes it challenging for policymakers to design interventions that address these issues effectively (Chukwuma, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of health literacy among mothers in Oyo State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of health literacy on maternal and child health outcomes.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving health literacy and, consequently, health outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of health literacy among mothers in Oyo State?
  2. How does health literacy influence maternal and child health outcomes?
  3. What interventions can improve health literacy and promote better health practices?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher health literacy is significantly associated with improved maternal and child health outcomes.
  2. Socioeconomic and cultural factors contribute to low health literacy levels.
  3. Targeted health education interventions will result in improved health literacy and better health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on mothers and children in both urban and rural areas of Oyo State. Data will be collected through surveys, health records, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential self-report bias and variability in literacy levels across different communities.
